The SRT bell rings, and students make their way into the brightly lit room, ready to learn about the steps to reach their dreams. People gather in groups, sharing ideas with bright smiles and open arms, guiding everyone on a path to success. In just three sessions at College App Camp, students learned to prepare for life after high school. This opportunity was available to seniors who are currently attending CHS. By taking this program, a lane opened to apply for over 1,000 colleges. During SRT this week, students gathered to learn about skills for writing applications, transcripts, and resumes. Let’s review what each session covered and everything worth noting.
The first session of camp helped students understand the full spectrum of college admissions. The whole class competed in the Grand Sorting Game, which explains how general admission works. The students also created an account for the “Common Application” and filled out the information needed. Students learned how to submit applications to colleges in the future. They also created a Naviance account to help plan and prepare for life. Sophia Sylvestor, a senior with experience from the camp, stated, “College App Camp really helped me learn what is expected of me and required of me, if I really want to get into college. They really helped steer me in the right direction by showing me critical skills like how to apply for Naviance.” By introducing these topics, students now feel less stressed and ready for a big future.
In session two, teachers explained how to make an essay sparkle among the rest. Students practiced reading both good and bad essays to understand the difference between them. They also built strong writing ideas and shared them with fellow peers. Session three would have been in SRT on Friday, Aug. 22. Students received professional feedback on their essay ideas while learning about financial aid opportunities.
So, what is the purpose of joining College App Camp? Well, applying to colleges can be confusing and stressful if students do not know anything about the process. This event has helped many seniors in the past get a jump start on applications. College can be difficult to think about, but seniors are building a better life for themselves in the future by starting now.
No need to worry, because the majority of the information needed to apply is covered throughout camp. However, the school counselors may even hold meetings with individual students in order to help out further. Those gloomy moments of planning and endlessly researching will soon end. College App Camp is like having a great friend, one that will stand up for you no matter what happens. A little bit of motivation is all it takes.
