In September, Abby Vidt, aka the Chicken Queen, explained, “in the final placement, Brioche, [her] salmon Faverolle won best Continental twice! She won both the open show (a show where professional chicken breeders compete against each other) and the 4-H show (a more laid-back show). My Light brown leghorn hen got reserve variety while my cockerel won best of variety,” said the champion. “I had a fantastic time at the fair and I loved every minute of being there!”
If you ever want to talk chicken, Vidt is your person, and they know their stuff. “There are over 60 breeds of chickens that are approved in the APA (American Poultry Association.) Within the breeds, each breed of birds has multiple varieties (Different colors.) So a leghorn chicken can come in multiple different varieties such as Light brown, Dark brown, White, Red, Silver, and Black. The breeds are then split into classes based on where the birds originated (American, Asiatic, Continental, Mediterranean, English, Etc.) Judges jobs are to find the bird that meats the APA standard. Whichever is closest will win the most points.” Vidt continues, “To get best of class is a very rare and very honored award since each class can have anywhere between 20-50 birds in them. Best of class also means that bird would compete for best of show (Best of show is where they combine all of the different types of poultry such as turkeys, Pigeons, ducks, and bantam chickens to find which is the best.) I did not win best of show, but I did receive an honorable mention in the final placement.”
Congrats, Abby.
